I am often asked what is SEO?
Simply put SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization, which is a methodology of strategies, techniques and tactics used to increase the amount of visitors to a website by obtaining a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (SERP) — including Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines. Does that make sense? Maybe not?
To understand what this really means, lets break this down even more.
- Quality of traffic. Your website can attract all the visitors in the world, but if they’re coming to your website because Google tells them you’re a resource for Kiss Me Quick Hats when really you’re a Web Design Business, that is not quality traffic. You want to attract visitors who are genuinely interested in the products that you offer.
- Quantity of traffic. Once you have the right people clicking through to your website from those Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), the more traffic the better.
- Organic results. Simply put organic traffic is any traffic that clicks through to your website that you don’t have to pay for. Perfect!
How does all his work? Lets look at the SE part of SEO
Lets think of a search engines as a websites that we all visit, for example Google, Bing, Yahoo. You type into that little box a request for information. Lets say, “Web Designers in Chesham, Bucks”. What you will then see is a response to this, with a long list of links to webpages. As you can see below we (Keep It Simple Website) are on the first page of Google, and we haven’t even paid for this. You will notice the first links and bottom links are all paid for Ads
So, how does this work? Search engines such as Google have web crawlers like spiders that go out into the web and gather information from our content. The crawlers return to Google with an index of information, so that when you enter your search string “web designers Chesham, bucks” Google tries to match this criteria with an Algorithm. Unfortunately this Algorithm is complex to understand.
The next thing to understand is the “O”Optimisation part of SEO. This comes down to many factors; from optimising your website with the right domain name, to Tags, Descriptions, having a mobile friendly websites, through to writing content that is optimised with links and specific text, as well as posting videos, blogs etc. We shall discuss the O in SEO in greater detail in our next Blog.
